Your holiday begins when you arrive at your hotel. But we are happy to help with your travel plans. There is lots of information below whether you are travelling from outside of the UK, from the rest of the UK or from within Scotland itself. If you have any questions or are unsure about what route to take or what times to opt for please contact us and we will be happy to help you.
All of our holidays begin on a Sunday evening so you need to plan your arrival at your hotel for late Sunday afternoon or early Sunday evening.
We leave up to you how you decide to travel to Scotland. If you are arriving from overseas your best option is to fly. The main international airports in Scotland and within 90 minutes of all of our hotels are Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen.
If you will be staying at a hotel in Dunkeld or Pitlochry the best airport to arrive at is Glasgow. If you will be staying at the Glenesk Hotel, Edzell, the best airport to arrive at is Aberdeen. If you will be staying at Murrayshall Hotel, Perth, the best airports to arrive at are either Edinburgh or Glasgow.
The main airport at Glasgow is called Glasgow Airport. A separate airport is called Glasgow Prestwick Airport. Glasgow Prestwick Airport is approximately 35 miles (56 Kilometres) south of Glasgow however it is the only airport in Scotland with a direct rail link (to Glasgow central station). Aberdeen Airport is at Dyce and is sometimes called Dyce airport.
Sometimes to get a greater choice of flights or better prices it may be a good idea to fly into London (or Manchester) and get a connection to a Scottish airport. Please note if you are flying into London that London has 4 main airports (Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and City). If you don’t want to travel between airports to make a connection make sure you opt for a connecting flight that goes from your international arrival airport. If you don’t mind travelling between London airports to make a connection, make sure you build in enough time for travel between airports.
There is also a small airport in Dundee (the nearest airport to our destination hotels). There are direct flights from London to Dundee that could be more convenient but they tend to be more expensive.
If you would like help to book your flights we recommend our local travel agent partners Rosemount Travel.
It is possible to get close to all our destination hotels by public transport.
It is possible to travel from London to our destinations in Scotland by train in around 7 hours. Most trains from London to Scotland depart from Kings Cross station in London but a few depart from Euston station in London. Train travel in the UK can be relatively expensive but booking well in advance means you can get much cheaper rates.
To travel to us by train from Edinburgh airport you will need to travel into Edinburgh Haymarket Railway Station by airport bus, a tram or a taxi – all easily accessible from the arrivals hall at Edinburgh airport. Alternatively you can get a connecting bus from the airport to Inverkeithing station. From either Haymarket or Inverkeithing stations you need to take a train to Perth station (for Murrayshall Hotel). It is perfectly possible to travel from Edinburgh to either Dunkeld and Birnam station (for Hilton Dunkeld House Hotel) or Montrose station (for Glenesk Hotel, Edzell) but your journey will be longer.
To travel to us from Glasgow airport you need to get a bus (approx £5) (or a taxi – approx £20) from the airport terminal to Glasgow Queen Street railway station. You can get a train from there to either Perth station (for Murrayshall Hotel) or Dunkeld and Birnam station (for Hilton Dunkeld House Hotel).
To travel to us at the Glenesk Hotel, Edzell, from Aberdeen airport you need to take a bus (or a taxi) from the airport terminal to Dyce railway station. From there you can get a train to Montrose railway station.
On arrival at the nearest railway station (Perth, Dunkeld and Birnam or Montrose) you can either get a taxi to your hotel or we will be doing pick-ups to meet the main train arrivals.
It is possible to travel to your destination by bus or coach. The journey will take longer but it should be cheaper. The main long-distance coach operator is Megabus. Local services are run by local authorities and small independent companies. Contact us for further information.
If you want to travel here by train you should be able to bring your bicycle. Check for details when you make your train booking. Click here for details of cycling to and around your hotel.
If you would like to take the hassle out of your journey we can arrange to meet you as you arrive at your Scottish mainland airport and whisk you back to your hotel. There will be an additional charge for this service depending upon your requirements. Please contact us on email@example.com for more details.
